The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has enhanced the lives of millions of people living with disabilities in Australia by providing them with direct funding for essential support and services.
Among the various funded supports, NDIS Support Coordination plays a crucial role in helping the participants to navigate the complexities of the NDIS and achieve their goals. Support Coordination simplifies the NDIS process for the participants. It ensures that they receive the most appropriate and tailored support to meet their unique disability needs. Support Coordinators work closely with participants, their families, and service providers to establish and implement their NDIS plans effectively. These experts also aim to improve the capability of the participants to coordinate their own supports.
The NDIS has three levels of Support Coordination that may be included in a participant’s plan, depending on their individual circumstances and support needs. Each level provides a different degree of assistance.
Support Connection helps participants understand their NDIS plan and connect with disability, community and mainstream supports. The focus is on building confidence and helping participants become more comfortable managing their supports.
Support Coordination provides more assistance with organising and coordinating supports. It can help participants understand how different services work together, connect with suitable providers and build the skills needed to manage their supports more independently.
Specialist Support Coordination is a higher level of assistance for participants with more complex support situations. It focuses on addressing barriers that affect access to supports and helping establish effective and stable support arrangements.

An NDIA planner is responsible for decisions about NDIS supports and funding and can approve an NDIS plan. NDIS partners, including Local Area Coordinators, can help participants understand the NDIS, connect with relevant services and prepare information, but they do not approve plans.
A Support Coordinator has a different role. Their main responsibility is to help a participant understand and use the supports in an approved plan, connect with suitable services and build confidence in managing their supports.
Yes. Level 3 is known as Specialist Support Coordination. It provides a higher level of coordination support for participants with complex needs or circumstances that require specialist assistance.
